Carol Taylor Thwaites

Date of birth: January 23 1936

Date of death: May 3 2016

Carol was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 23rd, 1936. Her parents, Herbert and Dorothy Taylor, moved their household to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1937.

Carol barely survived rheumatic fever when she was 12 years old. Her rehabilitation involved a lengthy stay at the Milwaukee Crippled Children's Hospital.

This experience left Carol with a well-developed sense of empathy, not only for people with developmental or disease issues in their lives, but for people in general.

Before her graduation from the University of Wisconsin, Carol met William Thwaites on a University-sponsored canoe trip.

Carol used outdoor recreation for enjoyment, exercise and of course for finding a compatible mate.

Carol worked for the Girl Scouts professionally. One of her goals was to help women trying to better their lives with greater academic experience at the university level. The American Association of University Women provided an avenue for this goal. Carol was proud of being elected as president of her local AAUW chapter in Tillamook, Oregon.

In the course of their marriage Carol and her husband raised three children; Elizabeth, Alan, and Andrew. The couple's marriage survived until Carol's death from colon cancer on May 3rd of this year. They had been married over 60 years. They were known for being an especially close and happy couple who shared recreational, political, family and social interests to the maximum extent possible.
